About Athletics New Brunswick
Athletics is often mistaken to mean a variety of sports. It is actually the European term for Track and Field and its affiliated disciplines. Athletics is a year-round sport. The sport of running, jumping, and throwing events, is the oldest in the world, and is also the basis for all sports. The skills learned in Athletics can be used, to some degree, in all other sports.
Athletics New Brunswick (ANB) is the provincial organizing body for track and field, cross country running, race walking, and road racing. It is the official Branch of Athletics Canada. We offer programs to affiliated and non-affiliated participants annually, reaching some 8000 athletes, coaches, officials, and volunteers across New Brunswick. We receive operational funding through the Sport, Recreation, and Active Living Branch of the Department of Municipalities, Province of New Brunswick.
About Run Jump Throw Wheel
Run Jump Throw Wheel (RJTW) is a national program developed by Athletics Canada that teaches fundamental movement skills and develops physical literacy. Using track and field inspired games, activities and skill challenges lead by instructors specifically trained to teach the fundamentals of running, jumping, throwing and wheeling (for children in wheelchairs).
Our goal is to provide a physical activity program that serves as a strong foundation for all sports. Run Jump Throw Wheel assists children in learning to move efficiently so that they grow into adults who are active, productive and healthy citizens.
About legs for Literacy
Legs for Literacy was started in 2000 by a small group of local runners and a team of enthusiastic volunteers. They saw a need for an event to raise funds for local school literacy programs. The first event included 5km and 10 km distances. Over the years the race grew to include the half marathon distance, and in 2005, the marathon distance was added. Due to amazing support from the running community and business sponsors, the race has grown from 268 total participants in 2005 (just 46 marathon finishers), to almost 800 total finishers in 2006, to last year’s registration total of approximately 3,000 runners.
Last year approximately 3,000 runners in total registered in four events: full marathon, half marathon, 10k and 5k. Another 200 school-aged children competed in our kids fun run, which encourages children at the elementary and middle school levels to make healthy physical activity a part of their daily routine. And last year our charitable contributions to literacy projects totalled $90,000. To date we have raised $378,000. Join us in 2014 and help make Spielo International Legs for Literacy a continuing success.
